Daisy: A Symbol of Hope
An old Celtic legend says daisies represent cheer.
In Norse mythology, daisies symbolizes new beginnings.
Romans believed daisies to be a symbol of transformation.
For me, daisies are a symbol of hope.
Someone recently explained to me that hope can be surmised by the phrase, “I can get to there from here.”
I’m not sure what your struggles are, but I am sure that they exist. “Here” for you might mean divorce, death, illness, abandonment, financial struggles, job loss, broken relationships, or mistakes. “Here” might mean mental illness, a faith crisis, feeling alone or unsure of the future. “Here” might mean unfair treatment, feelings of worthlessness, car troubles, quarantining from family (even during the holidays), or feeling like you don’t fit in.
Regardless of your “here”, you will get “there.” There is hope for you.
For us? Our “here” is male infertility and our “there” is having baby #2 join our family. While it’s been a looooong road, we are on our way to “there.” There is hope for us.
In our struggles, we’ve felt the full nature of the wide range of human emotions. We’ve felt just about everything from pain, grief, guilt, shame, blame, impatience, and sadness to joy, gratitude, content, calm, peace, optimism, and acceptance. Through it all, we’ve felt comfort in our belief in a loving God who has a plan for us and is guiding us through life.
So… Why a Daisy?
Few people know that statistically 1 in 8 couples struggle with infertility. Even less well known is that 50% of these couples struggle due to the male.
When we found out that we’d need to do IVF for baby #2 due to male infertility, we quickly realized that it’s virtually not talked about. There’s so much stigma around male infertility and the shame men feel about their lack of “manliness” (though that’s a can of worms for another day).
Our own struggle dealing with feelings of shame, blame, emasculation, inadequacy, guilt, and our own sense of “lack” makes our hearts ache for all the other couples who have no place to turn as they struggle with their own story.
We want to share the raw details of our life to help normalize male infertility. We want to be a source of hope to anyone willing to listen, regardless of what your struggles actually are. We want to be about doing good.
Stories are most powerful when they have a single focus, phrase, or image. For us, this focus in the daisy.
I’ve always been drawn to the daisy because yellow is my favorite color and daisies are so bright and happy.
The Danish part of me also loves daisies because the Danish Queen, Margrethe II, is nicknamed Daisy because it’s also her favorite flower. She even has an exclusive Georg Jensen jewelry collection inspired after her.
Lastly, we chose the daisy because, “in Norse mythology, the daisy is Freya’s sacred flower. Freya is the goddess of love, beauty, and fertility, and as such the daisy came by symbolize childbirth, motherhood, and new beginnings.”
As a symbol of fertility, daisies help me find hope in infertility.
Whatever your “here” and wherever your “there” is, daisies are a beautiful, simple, and powerful symbol of hope. Hope for new beginnings in your “there.”
